Having disk space problems is very common. Over the years, data will accumulate on your computer, and Microsoft Windows by nature keeps bloating out until eventually you will need to do the following things to reduce the amount of space wasted with unnecessary files.

In such a situation, it is very wise to make some of the following changes to your system.

How to free up Disk Space

(1) Decrease Disk Usage by adjusting properties of ‘Recycle Bin’.

The ‘Recycle Bin’ is a place where people lose on a lot of space in their machines. Let me show you how to adjust some of its properties to free up disk space.

(1-A) Right click on the ‘Recycle Bin’ desktop icon.


(1-B) Now click ‘Properties’.



This is the Screen you will get after clicking on ‘Properties’. You will see that there is a separate disk allocated to the Recycle Bin in both of your disks.

(1-C) Set the maximum space used for Recycle Bin to 1% or 2% of the size of each of your disk space.


Minimum space should be alloted to the ‘Recycle Bin’ so as to avoid using up a lot of space unnecessarily.

In this demonstration, I will be setting up this space to 2 percent of the total disk space.

(1-D) Check each drive to get a relative idea of the space you’ve allocated to the Recycle Bin now.


You may check the amount of space 2% of each disk relates to by clicking on the Local DIsk buttons at the top one by one. You will notice that this space is still more than that which is ideally required by the Recycle Bin.

(1-E) Click ‘OK’ to apply the settings and exit.


When you have set up and checked the space for all your disk drives, click ‘OK’. Your new settings will be applied and you will exit this menu.

(2) Disable ‘Hibernate’.

(2-A) Right-Click on the ‘Desktop’.


The first step is to Right-Click on the desktop.

(2-B) Click ‘Properties’.

(3) Decrease space used by ‘System Restore’.

If you are using ‘System Restore’, you can decrease a lot of space used up by this option as well.

If you are not using it, you may simply turn it off.

(3-A) Right click on the ‘My Computer’ icon on your desktop.

‘Turn off System Restore on all drives’ check box is unmarked as seen in the screenshot.

If you are not using it and do not wish to use it, then simply check this box and press OK to save and exit. But it is highly recommended to use System Restore.

(3-D) Click ‘Settings’ to decrease disk usage by System Restore.


(3-E) Adjust the slider to decrease space allocated to System Restore.


System Restore doesn’t require to use hard disk space in order of GBs. Lower this value to a few hundred MBs to free up a lot of space on your disk.


Setting this to around 1% or 2 % of your total disk space would be great.

(3-F) Click ‘OK’.


Click ‘OK’ to save these settings and exit.

(3-G) Command for Vista users to turn ‘Hibernate’ off.


1. Goto Command Prompt and come to your administrator account.

2. Type ” powercfg -H off ” and hit enter.

(4) Free up disk space by reducing the space allocated to the ‘Web Browser Cache’.

Decreasing space set for web browser cache is another great option. Your web browser doesn’t need this space to be in order of GBs. Simply lower this value to a few hundred MBs to free up a lot of space.

(4-A) Open ‘Internet Explorer’ to free up space allocated to your Web Browser cache.


(4-B) Click on ‘Tools’ in the Menu Bar.


(4-C) Now, click on ‘Internet Options’.


(4-D) Click on the ‘Settings’ button under the ‘Temporary Internet files’ heading-


(4-E) Check for the ‘Amount of disk space to use’.


Decrease this space to about 15 to 200 MBs. You do not need a GB to be set aside for this space.


(4-F) Click ‘OK’.


Click ‘OK’ to save the settings and exit.

(5) Delete Windows Temporary files manually.

You may free up a lot of space by deleting Windows temporary files manually as well. Just follow the following steps.

(5-A) Open “My Computer”.


(5-B) Open ‘Temp’ folder in Windows by going to the following address.


Copy ” C:\WINDOWS\Temp ” and paste in unto the URL bar.

(5-C) Hit ‘Enter’ on your keyboard after pasting.


Now simply select and delete all old files to clear up a lot of space. These files may be as old as your system, and carry no sifnificance.

(6) Clean up disk space by running the ‘cleanmgr’ command.

As you will see, you may free up a large amount of disk space here. Select Temporary Internet Files, Temporary Files, Recycle Bin and Compress Old Files here to free up a lot of space. Although this may take a lot of time, yet you will have the advantage of freeing up around a considerable amount of space summing upto even a few GBs.

(6-A) Click on ‘Run’ command in the ‘Start Menu’.


(6-B) Type ‘cleanmgr’ in the run window and click ‘OK’.


(6-C) Select the drive you want to clean up.


Let it be C drive first.

(6-D) Click ‘OK’ after selecting.


(6-E) Click ‘OK’ to start cleaning the disk.


To start up the process, click ‘OK’.

(6-F) Click ‘Yes’ to confirm.


(6-G) Wait patiently as your disk gets cleaned up!


Now wait patiently as your disk gets cleaned up. Go for a Coffee meanwhile.
